Who practices yoga today?

There’s no doubt about the evolution of yoga; it has changed a lot since it was first created over 5,000 years ago.

It has grown vastly in popularity too – since the days of community centre classes, yoga is now listed among the 10 most popular fitness activities in the world. But when many people think about ‘yogis’ today there are often a few misconceptions about who the practice is for.

We’ve heard it all: “I’m not flexible. I’m not young. I’m not slim.” Maybe you imagine a group of young women doing backbends or retired folk chanting. It’s too slow, it doesn’t improve strength…the list goes on! But, the reality of yoga today is it’s an incredibly versatile practice that can be adapted to suit almost any desire.

10 Class Pass

There are already between 300,000 and 460,000 people practicing yoga in the UK and this is growing! Yoga is a practical tool for real people and is easy to incorporate into everyday life – yoga really is for everyone.

At our friendly yoga studio in Milton Keynes, you’ll find all types of practitioners – men, women, young and old, from athletes to couch surfers – all looking to improve their wellbeing through yoga.

Today’s classes are far removed from the conceived meditation basis that traditional yoga stemmed from. While this is still part of many classes, and the focus in others, yoga has evolved with our ever-growing sedentary lifestyles. We are much more in need of the physical asana practice, combined with meditation in order to work toward a more aware, connected life.

It’s not all about stretching either – we offer over 17 different styles of yoga designed to suit all levels and wellbeing or fitness goals. Energising classes like Yoga Flow are ideal for those wanting to improve their fitness and flexibility, whilst those who are looking to destress and switch off from the outside would benefit from Restorative and Yoga Nidra. We even offer specialist classes like Baby Yoga and Family Yoga to introduce the youngest members of the family to the wellbeing practice.

So, if you’re looking to de-stress, work out, relax, lose weight, tone, help an injury or even a combination of these, yoga can be the catalyst to building a stable and healthy lifestyle regardless of your age, gender, physical ability or experience.

Everyone’s welcome on the mat at Whitespace. If you’re just getting started try out our Discovery Pass or Beginners Special.
