We’re thrilled to welcome Dr Yogi (Andrew McGonigle) back to Whitespace! He’s a medically trained yoga and anatomy teacher whose passion is making anatomy for Yoga teachers’ fun, practical and inclusive.
In this workshop, Andrew will explore in detail the anatomy and physiology of our upper limbs and spine applied to practising and teaching yoga. The sessions are interactive and experiential with lots of group work, and an emphasis on using anatomy to make asana practices as inclusive as possible.
What to Expect
The day will cover a detailed exploration of the upper limbs and spine including:
- The importance of shoulder joint and girdle mobility and stability in our yoga practice
- An evidence-based approach to Shoulder Impingement
- Demystifying hyperextension of the elbow joint
- Understanding why wrist pain is common in yoga and ways to potentially remedy this
- An exploration of the pelvis and sacro-iliac joints, and how to keep this area supported during our asana practice
- An evidence-based approach to back pain and prolapsed discs
- How to best support our cervical spine during inversions, and an evidence-based approach to releasing neck tension
The workshop will also include a fascinating delve into the Science behind why Yoga makes us feel so good and how it impacts on our nervous system, cardiovascular health and stress relief.

This workshop is perfect for teachers who wish to refresh or plug gaps in their Anatomy training, building confidence for working with students through this lens. We will explore anatomy to a depth that is appropriate for teaching yoga, and a detailed handout is included. This workshop earns 6 CPD points.
It’s also suitable for serious yoga practitioners who want to learn more about the human body works – and how to make it work better. At least one year of consistent practice required.

About Dr Yogi
After originally training to become a doctor, Andrew moved away from western medicine to pursue a career as a yoga teacher, massage therapist and anatomy teacher. Andrew has been practicing yoga and meditation for over 13 years and teaching strong, grounding and inclusive classes since 2009.
He combines all his skills to teach anatomy and physiology to yoga teachers across the UK and internationally. He is featured in the popular book Yoga Teaching Handbook: A Practical Guide for Yoga Teachers and Trainees. His teachers include Hamish Henry, Paul Dallaghan, Eileen Gauthier, Kristin Campbell and Anna Ashby.
