Lisa – Yoga & Pilates Teacher

Name…
Lisa Campbell

My style and approach to teaching Yoga & Pilates…
My teaching style varies depending on the type of class I’m teaching. When I’m teaching Pilates, I believe in a strong focus on the Joseph Pilates Principles. These include, focus, control, moving with breath, centering, alignment/precision and flow. I’m a great believer that when moving the ‘Pilates’ way, that ‘if your not feeling it in your core then your not moving correctly’. I enjoying helping those who attend my classes to understand where this should come from and how to really feel the benefits internally. This means long term that strength, co-ordination, control, stamina and rehabilitation are realised quickly and classes are fun.

When teaching a yoga class this again depends on style. With Flow, I like it to be fun, challenging and energising with a little focus on personal exploration and development. If I’m teaching Restorative/yin, the focus becomes softer, more internal, somewhat meditative and informative and when teaching a led Ashtanga class, structure, strong focus on breath and form is integral to a great practice. My teaching style throughout my yoga classes reflects an approach that is self nurturing, working within your own limitations but with an encouragement of personal exploration and growth.

My experience and training so far..
Having suffered with over 20 years of lower disc problems, issues with not sleeping, too much driving and a job that wasn’t helping my body, I just couldn’t cope with much more. I’d met a lady in my 20’s who’d inspired me to teach yoga, she planted the seeds all those years ago and finally it came to fruition 2 years ago in Bali when I traveled to complete my 200hr Teacher Training in a modified Ashtanga led practice. I came home consumed and excited and wanting to do more than just go to classes. I decided that if I could teach then I could help those who had similar issue’s both mentally and physically, that maybe I could offer them some release in the same way that I had found.  I quit my corporate job, starting teaching and studying with a view to teaching full time eventually. Since then I’ve completed additional courses in Vinyasa Flow, Yin, Hatha Hot and Pilates. I love to learn and also hold a gym instructors qualification and certificate in nutrition. I am also working my way through a series of additional courses that will qualify me as a spinal exercise specialist. This is something that is very important to me as it has had such an impact on my life.

I believe that Pilates & Yoga work intricately together whether it be for personal growth, rehabilitation, fitness/strength, stress release, relaxation, all are equally important. I love the history and philosophy of Yoga and all it touches, the way that through self love we can find a way to embrace our differences and allow ourselves more space to grow both mentally and physically. The underpinning values of Joseph Pilates, his teachings and how he worked to heal his body is proof that through work a determination and dedication we can help ourselves to heal.  By having both practices in our lives not only do we work with the core and spine but with the mind and body as a whole.

The special quality I bring to Whitespace…
As a yoga and Pilates teacher I have the ability to teach with an underlying focus on both elements. These principles are always in the background which gives a unique blend of knowledge of which I am really proud of.

My favourite thing about working at Whitespace…
I love the feel of the studio from the moment I arrive to the moment I leave. The smell of incense, the warmth of the reception area and community feel. Whenever I’m here it feels safe, and welcoming and is definitely my happy place.

A fun fact about me…
I began playing the piano 7 years ago. During my first exam I was able to play a piece and score 100%. I was invited to play at an awards concert with over 20 other successful students. All of them between 6 & 16. I was the eldest student there, apart from the parents, and it was one of the most nerve wracking yet funniest moment of my life.
