Preparing for class

The whitespace experience is more than just a class; you're part of a community. We would like you to enjoy and get the most out of every experience. We have a space for drinking, sparking up a conversation or you can sit quietly and read. Come as early as you want to soak up the relaxing atmosphere. This is your time and place.

All of our classes offer a comfortable, safe and welcoming space in which to explore the body, mind and breath.  We want your first class to be one of the best choices you’ve ever made.  Here’s what you can do to be prepared:

Before class

  • As with any exercise program, it is always a good idea to consult your doctor prior to participating
  • It is best not to eat before class or eat very lightly.
  • Try to avoid caffeine and nicotine for at least 1 hour before class
  • You'll need to use a sticky yoga mat. These can be hired at the studio for £1 or you can bring your own. Having your own mat has the obvious hygiene benefits and supports your commitment to your practice. You can pick these up from most major retailers or we do have nice mats available to purchase at the studio.

 What to wear

  • Be prepared to work in bare feet.
  • Comfortable, form-fitting workout-style clothing, allowing the teachers to be able to see your alignment in poses more easily, especially the knees, hips and spine.
  • Layers help to adjust for temperature changes during and after class.
  • Please use good hygiene and do not wear strong deodorants or perfumes.

When you arrive

  • If you can, arrive a few minutes early to find a space and prepare yourself.
  • Whitespace is a mobile and shoe free zone. Enjoy this time by removing your shoes and keeping mobile phones switched off and out of the studios.
  • Please make class payment or checkin before each class begins.
  • If you are new, be sure to introduce yourself to the teacher and let them know how much experience you have.
  • Inform your instructor if you're pregnant or have any health concerns/injuries.
  • If you should arrive late, please enter very quietly and sit until beginning meditation is over before you unroll your mat and prepare for class.

During Class

  • Try not to look around and watch other students. Keep your attention on yourself, and/or the teacher. This is your practice.
  • Stay focused and keep your awareness on your breath.
  • Remember, the practice of yoga is enjoyed much more when we listen to our bodies. Don't push past your limits, maintain a good attitude, keep an open mind, and breathe.
  • Above all, please be respectful and considerate of the other students in class and extend the same courtesy to yourself.

After class

  • Practice as often as you can. Two to three times per week will show improvement for most students within three months, but quite often sooner.

Most Importantly - have a light heart and a good time!
