Deborah McNicholas - Founder + Director

Deborah is the founder of Whitespace Yoga and has practiced yoga since 2000, first explored while travelling in Australia as a way to deal with some of life's challenges and the pressures of a highly-stressed job. She literally 'fell in love' from her first class and the immediate health benefits she saw from her yoga practice sparked Deborah’s interest in yogic philosophy and a desire to find a deeper experience and meaning. She awakened to not only yoga, but also vegetarianism, humanitarism, arts and even politics!

Trained internationally in Australia, US, India and UK, and recently returned from teaching in an ashram in South America, she has been inspired by teachers and students around the world.

She's decided to label her classes hatha to avoid coming up with quirky names that don’t necessarily mean anything to anyone. Since hatha is the blanket term for all physical asana, this encompasses all the different directions a class might take. For example, some days we do a slow flow (a.k.a. yin-yasa), sometimes we do yin or restorative poses (or nap yoga), and some days we get super geeky about a certain anatomical focus and break it down in a bunch of static poses (yoga lab). What we do completely depends on who shows up and how we’re feeling.

What you can expect for sure is that you will be welcomed just as you are into a community of fellow human beings, you’ll receive expert anatomical instruction and you’ll be given permission to get what you need from your practice. The rest is up to you, and what gets revealed through your intentional presence.

She teaches yoga because she believes that small changes can effect great change. We take lessons off the mat and in to our daily lives - lessons from moments where we decide to stop pushing and surrender, work through a challenging posture, or choose to just breath. In her classes, expect an energising practice with an emphasis on being true to yourself and gaining joy, not frustration, on your mat.

Fully accredited and Insured, British Wheel of Yoga Diploma (500hrs), Senior Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance, and Register of Exercise Professionals - Level 3 Advanced Yoga Instructor
